The Piedmont region, stretching down the Blue Ridge foothills like a stage curtain, historically has been a melting pot of music and culture, from blues and bluegrass to country and R&B. You can hear the Piedmont in Blind Willie McTell, Bill Monroe, Otis Redding, the Allman Brothers and Outkast (among others); the way these artists can borrow from long-standing musical traditions and still play by their own rules, their keen senses of melody, and unrelenting authenticity. There’s no NYC or LA over here to dictate what’s cutting edge: you gotta make your own blade. The Piedmont is where hardscrabble folks have come together to make a living in the red clay, and we’ve formed and been formed by it.
